Chapitre 9 : La petite fille
— Oui, nous avons trouvé des indices, déclara Finnick.
— C'est super ! s'exclama Stiles, un sourire apparut sur son visage.
— Et moi qui me demandais comment tu allais la remercier pour ce qu'elle a fait. J'espérais que tu te donnerais à elle, mais il s'avère que tu appartiens déjà à une autre femme.
Finnick ignora complètement la taquinerie éhontée de son ami.
Voyant qu'il n'arrivait pas à faire réagir Finnick, Stiles fit une petite moue. Puis, son regard tomba sur le fauteuil roulant de ce dernier et il écarquilla les yeux en disant :
— Finnick, as-tu déjà parlé de tes jambes à ta femme ?
Finnick, qui faisait défiler les rapports du département des finances, se figea en entendant la question de l'homme.
Après quelques inspirations, il marmonna :
— Non.
Avec un froncement de sourcils, Stiles déclara :
— Finnick, ce n'est pas que je veuille être désagréable, mais la raison pour laquelle tu l'as épousée n'a pas d'importance. Puisque vous êtes mariés maintenant, es-tu sûr de vouloir lui cacher la vérité ? Peut-être que...
Subitement, l'homme s'arrêta de parler, se demandant s'il devait continuer ou pas. Finalement, il serra les dents avant de poursuivre :
— Peut-être que tu devrais essayer d'accepter ta nouvelle femme. On ne peut pas toujours vivre dans l'ombre du passé.
Il connaissait trop bien Finnick. Même s'il avait insisté sur le fait que la seule raison pour laquelle il avait épousé Vivian était pour faire plaisir à son grand-père, il n'y avait aucune chance qu'il accepte de se marier avec elle s'il ne l'aimait pas.
Finnick ne prononça plus un mot. Peu de temps après, il avait fini de lire les rapports. Ce n'est qu'à ce moment-là qu'il répondit d'une voix douce :
— Je ne peux pas l'oublier.
Stiles était plutôt stupéfait d'entendre cela.
Fixant attentivement le visage de Finnick, il remarqua l'indifférence calme qui y régnait. La pitié brillait dans ses yeux.
L'accident de voiture qui s'était produit il y a dix ans avait été un cauchemar pour tout le monde.
Ils pensaient tous que Finnick avait perdu l'usage de ses jambes dans cet accident.
Cependant, ils se trompaient tous.
Finnick n'avait pas perdu ses jambes, mais plutôt son cœur.

Lorsque Vivian rentra à la maison après le travail, Molly et Liam étaient présents dans le salon avec leurs bagages.
— Molly, Liam, qu'est-ce que vous faites...
— Mme Norton, nous allons au mariage de notre fils qui aura lieu demain ! précisa Liam avec un sourire ravi.
— Ah oui ? Félicitations ! Combien de jours serez-vous absents ?
— Nous serons de retour demain soir, car le mariage aura lieu ici à Sunshine City, répondit Molly avec un agréable sourire. Cependant, une expression inquiète traversa son visage lorsqu'elle se tourna vers Finnick.
— Mais, comme il n'y a personne à la maison, M. Norton n'aura personne pour lui préparer le petit déjeuner.
Les propos de Molly laissèrent Vivian sans voix.
Est-ce ainsi que les riches vivent ? Ce n'est qu'un petit déjeuner ! Ont-ils vraiment besoin d'engager quelqu'un pour leur faire à manger ?
— Ce n'est pas grave, déclara Finnick, sortant Vivian de ses pensées. Puis, il continua :
— Vivian, tu sais cuisiner, n'est-ce pas ?
— Hein ? répondit Vivian avec éloquence. Fixant le regard sombre de Finnick, elle balbutia :
— Oui...
Puis, se souvenant du copieux petit déjeuner que Molly avait préparé le matin, elle ne put s'empêcher d'ajouter :
— Euh, juste un peu...
En entendant cela, une brève lueur d'amusement apparut dans le regard de Finnick.
— C'est suffisant, ajouta-t-il.
Le lendemain matin,
Vivian se réveilla une heure plus tôt que d'habitude pour prendre son petit déjeuner.
Alors qu'elle s'apprêtait à monter à l'étage pour appeler Finnick, ce dernier sortit de l'ascenseur.
— As-tu des piles ?
Déconcertée par la question, Vivian mit un moment à réaliser qu'il tenait un rasoir électrique dans ses mains.
Puis, saisissant le rasoir, elle vérifia l'emplacement des piles.
— Il faut une pile bouton pour cela. Y en a-t-il dans la maison ?
— Non.
Vivian observa la barbe qui tapissait la mâchoire de Finnick, confirmant qu'il avait vraiment besoin de se raser.
— Y a-t-il des supermarchés ou des magasins de proximité ? demanda-t-elle.
— Non.
Exaspérée, la femme insista :
— Il n'y a rien par ici ?
Cette fois, Finnick se contenta de secouer la tête.
Vivian aurait pu pleurer en voyant la façon dont ces gens riches vivaient.
— Qu'est-ce qu'on va faire maintenant ? soupira-t-elle, frustrée.
— Pourrais-tu demander à ton assistant d'en acheter en venant ici ?
— Il est déjà en route. J'ai une réunion très importante tout à l'heure et je ne peux pas me permettre d'arriver en retard, déclara Finnick avec un froncement de sourcils avant d'ajouter :
— J'ai demandé à Liam et il m'a donné un rasoir neuf. Cependant, il n'est pas électrique alors je ne sais pas vraiment comment l'utiliser.
Vivian le fixa pendant un moment jusqu'à ce qu'un déclic se produise dans son cerveau. Elle comprit rapidement pourquoi il était là. Il voulait qu'elle l'aide à se raser !
— Où se trouve ce rasoir ? demanda-t-elle. Elle ne put s'empêcher de le trouver plutôt adorable en ce moment. Se pinçant les lèvres, elle poursuivit :
— Je sais m'en servir et je pourrais te raser sans problème.
— Dans le placard de rangement.
En fouillant dans ledit placard, Vivian le trouva en un rien de temps. Il s'agissait d'un rasoir traditionnel, le genre qui devait être utilisé avec de la mousse à raser. Elle lui enduisit la mâchoire d'une épaisse couche de mousse avant de commencer à raser soigneusement sa barbe.
Leurs visages étaient si proches que son souffle effleurait légèrement les joues de l'homme.
Finnick n'avait qu'à lever un peu le regard pour voir son visage de près. Il pouvait même voir les petits poils sur sa peau lisse et pâle, lui rappelant le duvet de pêche.
Comme s'il avait senti son regard, ses nerfs déjà tendus se crispèrent davantage.
— Que se passe-t-il, t'ai-je fait une entaille ?
— Non, répondit Finnick d'une voix froide avant d'ajouter :
— Je me disais juste que tu agis vraiment comme ma femme en ce moment.
Interloquée par cette déclaration, Vivian ne put s'empêcher de rougir.
Bien que nous soyons mariés, il utilise quand même l'expression "agir comme", cela signifie-t-il qu'il trouve aussi que notre mariage abrupt est trop surréaliste ?
— C'est bon, j'ai terminé. En un rien de temps, Vivian avait fini de raser son mari. Ensuite, essuyant la mousse restante, elle regarda son travail avec un sourire aux lèvres en disant :
— J'ai fait du bon travail.
— Merci, murmura Finnick avant de se diriger vers la table à manger.
En raison de leur intimité antérieure, le petit déjeuner fut un moment plutôt gênant. Par conséquent, Vivian oublia même de lui demander s'il était satisfait de sa cuisine.
Noah arriva peu de temps après le repas. Étant donné que Finnick était pressé aujourd'hui, il ne pourrait pas la déposer à la station de métro. La femme fut donc obligée d'appeler un taxi pour qu'il l'emmène directement à l'entreprise de magazines.
Une fois au bureau, elle fut déçue de réaliser que l'atmosphère agréable d'hier avait disparu. Elle était remplacée par un air tendu et nerveux. Saisissant le bras de Sarah, Vivian murmura :
— Il s'est passé quelque chose ?
— N'as-tu pas lu tes mails ce matin, Vivian ? répondit Sarah, les yeux écarquillés.
— Hier, quelqu'un a racheté notre entreprise ! Tous les cadres supérieurs ont été remplacés !
Vivian fut abasourdie par la nouvelle.
Leur entreprise de magazines n'était pas très grande, mais elle existait depuis longtemps. Pourquoi aurait-elle été soudainement vendue ?
Elle n'eut pas le temps de répondre qu'un bruit retentit près de l'entrée.
— Il arrive, le nouveau rédacteur en chef arrive !
Jetant un coup d'œil, Vivian aperçut une grande silhouette entrer à grands pas dans l'entreprise, suivie d'un groupe de personnes.
En regardant de plus près le visage de l'homme, elle eut l'impression qu'on lui avait versé un seau d'eau glacée sur la tête. En un instant, son sang se figea dans ses veines.
